In this setting, we find Antony’s vision of a Nordic spa that became Thermea Spa Village, his vision now benefitting 200 staff and close to 350,000 spa clients per year.
Growing up in Toronto and Durham Region, von Palleske faces his share of challenges. His parents separated when he was just 9 years old, and at 18, their house in Whitby burned to the ground. Yet, even in the face of such adversity, he remains steadfast in his belief that “things are fixable.” This unwavering optimism and determination would prove to be the cornerstone of his successful life journey.
From a young age, von Palleske learned the value of life through harrowing experiences. On his first day of kindergarten, a motorcycle accident saw him get run over. At nine years old, while hiking with his brother and father in the iconic Ontario nature reserve Algonquin Park, they got lost in a fierce snowstorm, wandering for the week end before finding their own way out of the forest. He ended up in the hospital with leg injuries, his father unconscious and requiring skin grafts. “From the age of five years old, I learned the value of life,” von Palleske said.
They wandered around for 2 days before getting out. I ended up in hospital for treatment for leg injuries. The temperature dropped to minus 23 degrees, and we were lost for the entire weekend. My dad was unconscious at one point, and my brother and I dragged him at times to get him moving. I was on the amputation table. I miraculously recovered with no amputation. Dad had to have skin grafts,” he said.
Despite these early trials, his passion for life and adventure never wavers. He served as a level 3 certified ski instructor, training others in the art of navigating the slopes. Running became his form of meditation, a way to problem-solve and eradicate stress. Yet even this passion got tested when, in 2011, he contracted flesh-eating disease from a post-op infection following knee surgery. Facing a mere five percent chance of survival, von Palleske found himself on life-support, battling five simultaneous diseases. Yet, he always emerges victorious, walking without the need for a walker or stick just one year fter considering leg amputation.
“I got flesh-eating disease, from a post-op infection that I had done to fix a knee issue I was facing. The knee was hurt when I was doing a marathon. I was also a ski instructor, also heavy on the knees. I became a certified instructor that trained ski instructors. Running was a form of meditation for me. You problem-solve as a runner. Also, stress eradication”. He woke up from the anesthetic “relieved that I still had my leg and it wasn’t amputated. I had four diseases, with the doctor saying I had a five percent chance of living. I was on life-support. I also suffered withdrawal symptoms from quitting pain medication”.
Von Palleske’s indomitable spirit and love for life form the driving forces behind his many ventures. From playing in a band and signing a worldwide record deal with BMG to becoming an executive for Anthem Ole, a music organization, his creative pursuits have known no bounds. His love for wellness inspired in his experiences as a marathon runner and ski instructor, led him to wonder aloud to a friend one day, why there’s no thermal spa like those of Europe, in Ontario. His friend challenged him to open one. Intrigued with the idea, von Palleske enrolled in a course in wellness spa management. The off-hand remark and subsequent conversation on the topic generated his epiphany of the need for a thermal spa in Ontario, a revelation that would change the course of his life.
Undeterred with the challenges of bringing his visions to life, von Palleske is the kind of man who works with single-minded focus. He once bought a fixer-upper rundown house in Whitby and proceeded to renovate this dilapidated building into an art gallery, gaining visibility and credibility within the city management circle. Today, the Art Gallery at this building stands as a flourishing landmark in the city at 1200 Brock Street South.
When the opportunity arose at the city to bid for the development of a prime Whitby landmark then called Cullen Gardens, he found himself up against the powerful Durham College in his bid to secure city permits to build the thermal spa. Yet, armed with a meticulous business plan and reputation forged during his art gallery project, von Palleske emerged victorious, securing at the time a partnership with Nordic Quebec Thermal Spa. Antony left the group in 2016 and the project ended up costing 85 million and was re-named Thermea Spa Village.
Today, the Whitby Thermea Spa Village stands as a testament to von Palleske’s vision and tenacity, employing 200 staff and welcoming 350,000 customers each year. His success, he believes, lies in his attention to detail and his willingness to embrace the particulars. “I am particular about particulars. I look at the details,” he said.
Von Palleske’s life journey personifies resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment to turning adversity into opportunity. From the lessons learned from his father’s experiences in war-torn Germany to his own battles with flesh-eating disease and the loss of his childhood home, he emerges stronger, determined, and with a clear vision for the future.
As he embarks on new projects, including the development of a resort and spa in the Niagara Falls area and the construction of the highest-star hotel in North America, von Palleske remains guided in the wisdom that his uncle imparted to him. His uncle, a professor who taught doctors to be surgeons in war-torn Germany, told him that “there’s nothing you cannot do,” a life lesson that resonates throughout von Palleske’s life.
In a world where the average person gives up and walks away from problems, Antony von Palleske stands as a shining example of the power of perseverance, passion, and an unwavering commitment to one’s vision, to what’s possible. His story serves as an inspiration to us all, a reminder that with tenacity, meticulousness, and persistence, we can overcome even the greatest of obstacles and achieve the extraordinary.
As von Palleske himself puts it, “life is a marathon. Money doesn’t drive me. It’s the success of a project that drives me. I like to see a big project come into being. It is not all about money. Money is a symptom of a job well done.”
He’s set his sights on ever-greater heights and a passion that feeds his purpose. Antony von Palleske seems destined to leave an indelible mark on the world, one project at a time.
The Resilience of Antony von Palleske
A Tale of Triumph and Tenacity
In the tapestry of a life, few threads sparkle as vibrant and enduring as those of resilience, persistence and determination. Antony von Palleske, a man whose lineage traces back to German royalty, embodies these qualities. His life story, marked with a series of formidable challenges and remarkable recoveries, offers a profound narrative of survival and success.
Early Life and Family Heritage
His father, Wolfgang von Palleske, served as a young soldier drafted into the German Army during World War II at the tender age of 14, until he was 28 when he escaped from a post-war concentration camp. Post-war, Wolfgang’s journey took him to Canada, where he carved out a new life as a lumberjack in British Columbia and later as a photographer—an occupation that serendipitously led him to capture a fleeting moment with Marilyn Monroe. This photograph, a relic of a bygone era, became miraculously preserved, discovered by the young von Palleske wedged in a book safe from their devastating house fire.
Today, Antony von Palleske battles on with his wife, Shannon, and three children, aged 24, 13 and 11.
Overcoming Adversity
From an early age, von Palleske’s life story saw trials punctuate it, testing his mettle. At 18, he experienced the devastating loss of his home to a fire. His childhood was marked by a near-fatal accident when he was run over by a motorcycle on his first day of kindergarten. Another harrowing incident occurred during a family hike in Algonquin Park when a sudden snowstorm left him and his family lost and fighting for survival. These early experiences instilled in him a profound appreciation for life and the importance of perseverance.
A Journey Through Pain and Recovery
Von Palleske’s adult life became no less challenging. In 2011, he battled a flesh-eating disease following a knee surgery, a complication that nearly cost him his leg. His recovery serves as a testament to his indomitable spirit, echoing his belief that “things are fixable” and that every experience, however dire, holds a lesson.
Entrepreneurial Ventures and Achievements
With a passion for wellness and a keen eye for business, von Palleske ventured into the spa industry. His journey began with a simple conversation about the need for a thermal spa in Ontario, which followed his project to transform a dilapidated building into an art gallery. This project not only revitalized a community but also cemented his reputation as a visionary entrepreneur.
In a spa management training program he took at college when he decided to go into the spa industry, he met two fellow students in his class who had connections with Nordic Quebec Thermal Spa. He put together a business plan, and the owner there read it. Out of that connection, he was able to put together the project for the Whitby Thermea Spa. He became a partner in the project. Nordic later funded the project, to the tune of $85M.
Today, he is working on a project to develop a swath of the Niagara Falls area into a resort and spa, with the Pearle Hospitality group.
A patient man, von Palleske started the process to bid for the Request For Proposal (RFP) for Cullen Gardens in 2006, and only got word in 2010 that he had won the RFP. “And then it took another three years to close the real estate deal,” he said.
Current Endeavors and Future Aspirations
Today, von Palleske immerses himself in an ambitious project to develop a resort and spa in the Niagara Falls area, a testament to his unyielding ambition and dedication. His approach to life and business is meticulous, driven not by the pursuit of wealth but by the satisfaction of seeing a project through to its fruition.
His work ethic is heavy, with inspiration drawn from the memory of his father, who overcame the German war, including spending time as a prisoner of war in a brutal camp before migrating to Canada.
Waking up at 5 A.M. every day, he works hard, and takes care of himself, because “that’s important”.
He describes himself as tenacious, meticulous, persistent. “I get cold calls from billionaires to be on their team. Tenacity to push through negatives to achieve more, I got this from my father. You’ve got to be able to take a hit, get back up, and keep going.”
One of the recent RFP’s that he was part of was the Toronto Power Generating Station, it will probably be the most luxurious hotel in North America. From what he understands it will take about four to five years to complete the project. The brainchild for the project, James and Aaron Ciaconne, brothers, of Pearl Hospitality, are his clients. “They are visionaries”.
“Life is a marathon. I believe in aiming big. I remember when I was little, in Germany, my uncle, who was a professor teaching doctors to be surgeons, told me that there’s nothing I cannot do. He told me that he became a surgeon in war-torn Germany. I never forgot that conversation and his advice, that there’s nothing you can’t do. My dad proved that too”.
He said Canada is a land of opportunity; “work and make it happen. Passion feeds your purpose”.
The current project at Niagara is substantially bigger than Thermea and will be that much better. Another project is a $1.5Bln project mixed-use community of commercial and residential, also at Niagara and will include a waterpark. A business that he is co-developing and learning as he goes.
Philosophical Reflections
Von Palleske’s philosophy flows from his experiences, and the wisdom passed down from his family. He believes in the power of persistence, the importance of taking care of oneself, and the value of aiming high. His life is a continuous marathon, a race not against others, but against the limits of what seems impossible.
Antony von Palleske’s story is more than a personal narrative; it is a source of inspiration. It serves as a reminder that resilience can forge paths through the most daunting obstacles, and that life, in all its complexity, is a mosaic of opportunities for those who dare to embrace it fully. His journey underscores a timeless truth: passion fuels purpose, and with tenacity, any challenge can be transformed into a triumph. Because “I’ve got that staying power to see things through,” he said.
Early this year, 2024, six weeks ago, von Palleske suffered another major health blow when a speeding driver slammed into the back of his car, destroying his vehicle.
His car stopped at the stop-sign between the speeding vehicle that hit him from behind, and toddlers and small children crossing the road. His car saved the children from the speeding car, he said. He suffered herniated disks and whiplash, facing constant headache and what the doctors say might be a permanent condition. He does physio and chiropractic treatment four days per week. But he faces these days with resolve and determination, “you can’t just sit on things. I have a love for life, an adventurous spirit. I never take no for an answer.”
Von Palleske’s life is a symphony of highs and lows, from the thrill of signing a worldwide record deal with BMG as a drummer to the quiet contemplation of sailing on his own boat. His experiences culminate in a vision for wellness, inspired by the thermal spas of Europe, leading him to advocate for a similar sanctuary in Ontario.
As von Palleske prepares for his induction into the Teutonic Order of Knights in Vienna, he reflects on a life marked by staying power and the conviction that every experience, no matter how dire, carries a lesson—a positive one. His story, a blend of his biographic personal essay, the facts of his achievements in a literary journalism story, and the narrative arc of a short story, is a tribute to the indomitable human spirit, a chronicle of a man who, like the knights of old, never wavered in the face of adversity.
In the heart of Ontario, amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life, lies this story waiting to be unveiled—a story of triumph against the odds, of resilience in the face of adversity. Through their eyes, von Palleske gains a deeper understanding of the human experience, realizing that beneath the surface, we are all bound by the same universal truths of love, loss, and the relentless pursuit of happiness.
And so, armed with the wisdom of his travels and the strength of his spirit, von Palleske was ready to embark on the next chapter of his life journey. He seeks to inspire others to embrace their own unique path—to embrace the beauty of their scars and the power of their dreams.
